Fred Scruton Photography

Biography

A native of the Buffalo, New York area, Fred Scruton
majored as an undergraduate in philosophy at the University
of Rochester, and received an MFA in photography from Pratt
Institute in 1982.

After graduating from Pratt, he worked in New York City
until 2003 as a professional freelance photographer, and
specialized in photography of artwork, installation, and
architecture. His clients included well-known artists, art
galleries, museums, collectors, and periodicals. This work
has been published extensively in art magazines, museum
and gallery catalogues, and books.

Sparked by the work of an ‘outsider’ sign-painter and
outdoor installation artist in his Brooklyn neighborhood,
Fred’s personal work turned, in the early 1990’s, towards
photographing the works of vernacular, folk, and self-taught
artists. Projects from this on-going body of work have been
widely exhibited since 1999.

In 1997, Fred returned to Pratt to teach undergraduate
photography, and in 1999 he became an adjunct professor
at Queens College of the City University of New York as well.
In 2003, Fred accepted an assistant professorship at Edinboro
University of Pennsylvania, where he currently lives and
teaches photography.
